Feeling It

Ever since my little stint in the hospital I feel like pregnancy is catching up with me. I used to be able to sleep through the night without second thought to my growing belly. Now, I have to build up a fortress of pillows so I can get a couple of hours of solid sleep. I have this ritual that not only cracks John up, but my little dog Casper too. I swear he stands at the end of the bed and watches me construct my fort with a snicker on his face. My nightly ritual consists of me taking my long squishy felt body pillow and putting it in the middle of the bed. Which means I can't snuggle up to John like I love to do. I then crawl in bed and take two king size pillows and line them down the outside of the bed. The final step of my bed time ritual is to take a throw pillow and put it under or between my legs. Then and only then can I think about getting some good zz's. I wish I could say I'm then set for the night, but about 2 hours into my sleep I wake for the first of many trips to the bathroom. Since I was in the hospital for a kidney infection any urge to pee has me running for the bathroom. I keep hearing the doctor's words of wisdom saying that a pregnant woman should never hold their pee since that can be one of the causes to a kidney infection. I feel like the kid in the movie Christmas Story that keeps hearing the words "You'll shoot your eye out" over the BB gun he wanted, except my haunting words are "You'll get another kidney infection." It makes me shiver just thinking about it.

I also had another side effect catch up with me, swollen feet. I start the day off with regular sized feet and ankles and as the day goes on, and I'm my feet more, the bigger they get. For a couple of days when I was first released from the hospital my feet were so swollen that I couldn't even wear regular shoes or socks. Thank goodness I had the week off for Christmas because I would have looked funny going into the office in my slippers. I almost feel like I'm looking down at the bride of Frankenstein's feet.

In fact, lately I feel like I'm looking at my body through one of those amusement park funny mirrors when I see my reflection. My belly gets in the way now more often than not. It's amazing the little things that are hard to do when you’re pregnant. For instance, putting on socks and shoes. To get my socks on in the morning I have to get on the bed and do a sideways lean while propping myself up on one of the hundreds of pillows on the bed. Or I sit on the side of the bathtub and prop my leg up and hope that I get my foot in the top of the sock on the first try. I do that on days I'm feeling lucky, it’s almost like a carnival game only it’s with my horrible balance and body. I don't remember the last time I wore a pair of my cute heels. I now opt for shoes that I can slip on and that are flat. Comfort before beauty is my new motto when it comes to shoes. I always heard that your feet grow when you’re pregnant but I thought that was a crazy wise-tale people told you to freak you out. Now I know that isn't true. I went from a size 9 to 9 and 1/2. I'm hoping my feet hold at that size because I already have long flipper feet as it is.

I also get tired easily when out and about. I used to be able to go on marathon shopping sprees and walk around stores and malls for hours at a time. Now, I'm lucky if I can make it an hour before wanting to sit down and relax. I can actually feel the weight of the baby inside of me. What's scary is the fact that I'm only 23 weeks along, and have 3 more months to go.

I will say the upside to being this far along is feeling the baby move all day. The baby is big enough now that John can feel him move and you can actually see my stomach move when the baby is on a kicking or punching fit. It's actually really cool, and a feeling that makes me feel warm and cheery inside. Every time I start to think these pregnancy "side effects" suck, I think about this wonderful blessing that will be here before we know it. I also get more massages and help around the house from John which is always a good thing.

Here's hoping these next 3 months go by smoothly. I know I will probably experience more unpleasant side effects but it's all in the name of love for baby Chilcoat and for him I'd go through hell and back.

An early Christmas present

I've been meaning to write about the early Christmas present John and I got about 2 weeks ago for awhile, but time and other things (see previous entry) has kept me from it. The days building up to finding out the sex of our baby were full of excitement and wonder. My thoughts and dreams were consumed with what the sex of our baby could be. At last December 10th came along, the day we had been waiting for, the day we were going to find out the sex of our baby.

Thank goodness I grabbed the first appointment of the day because I was up that morning long before the alarm went off. As John and I drove to the doctor's office we talked about what we thought the baby would be. We both were convinced it was a girl. We arrived at the doctor’s office 15 minutes early and as luck would have it, the sonogram tech was running 30 minutes behind. Those 30 minutes that we sat in the waiting room felt like hours. The nurse finally came out and called my name, and John and I walked back to the examining room with Texas size smiles on our faces.

What they don't tell you about the exam, is they measure your baby to make sure everything is developing properly first and tell you at the end of the sonogram the sex of your baby. As the doctor looked at each body part, assuring us everything looked good I could barely concentrate. I tried the best I could to focus, but in my head I wanted to scream "JUST TELL ME ALREADY!" To make matters worse John swore he saw the "part" as he called it and said it was a girl. The doctor said she had seen too, but wouldn't confirm or deny what John thought he saw. Then like music to my ears, the doctor turned and looked at us and asked if we were ready to find out what we were having. John and I grabbed each other’s hands and said yes with so much enthusiasm it made the doctor laugh. Just like Santa Clause she gave us an early Christmas present, we were having a BOY! John immediately dropped to his knees and tears came out of his eyes, which of course made me start crying tears of joy. The doctor then said she would give us a moment together to soak in the great news. John and I just sat there hugging each other laughing at the news we had just received. We were going to have a beautiful baby boy!

I immediately started thinking about having a sweet lil momma's boy. I've been told by several mothers and guys that the love boys have for their mom is indescribable. I had flashes of John throwing the football or baseball in the front yard with him. And of me putting a band aid on his knee from learning to ride a bike. My love for this baby tripled in a matter of one second. I cannot wait to meet him and kiss him for the first time.

Since finding out the sex of our baby we've been consumed with picking out a theme for the nursery and names. I used to think there weren’t cute things out there for boys, but I've now realized there are a million adorable things out there which makes it hard to decide on anything. Hopefully by the time baby Chilcoat is here we'll have a name and room for him. Until then, I'm still soaking in the thought of having a baby boy in the house very soon.

To Hell and Back

These past couple of days have felt like a whirlwind of pain, scaredness (if that's a word), and hospitals. I was hoping my next entry would be to tell you about the sex of our baby. Which I will write a seperate entry on, but this one is about the worst pain I've EVER experienced in my life.

I feel like so much has gone on, I don't know where to start. So, I guess I'll start from the beginning. This past Wednesday, I was at my admin work Christmas party over at a coworker’s house. From the beginning of the party I felt sharp pains that would shoot across my stomach. I didn't think anything of it because I had been reading that as my baby grows (now gaining about a pound a week) so would my ligaments and there would be times that I would feel sharp pains because of my stomach and ligaments stretching. As the party went on I was feeling not only the sharp pains in my stomach but in my side and back. I still wasn't too alarmed, but excused myself from the party early so I could get home and off my feet.
Driving home the pain got worse and worse to where it was becoming uncomfortable to sit and breathe. I got home and tried using the bathroom thinking maybe it was a bad bowl movement or something. Since I had never experienced this before I didn't know what was going on. The pain then moved to an excruciating pain that would come and go about every 2 minutes. I started getting scared that I was going into early labor so I decided to drive myself to the emergency room.

Where was John you may ask?? Well, he was actually visiting some friends in the hospital that had just had a baby that was in the ER because of complications at birth. I called John on the way to the ER trying to fight back tears and told him I thought I was in labor and was going to the hospital. He said he would be on the way, and I couldn't believe how quickly he got to me. I had enough time to get into the ER and begin the check in process and he was there. The entire time hospital staff was asking me questions the pain was getting worse and worse to where I couldn't even catch my breath. They wheeled me over to labor and delivery and the whole time I was praying that God would make this go away and for our baby to be ok. The nurses in labor and deliver did some test to see what was going on with me. About 30 minutes later they ruled out premature labor which put me at some ease but didn't explain this horrible pain I was having. They finally told me I had a urinary tract infection and released me with some antibiotics.

I wish I could say everything ended there, but that was only the start of the downward spiral. That night at home, I didn't get any sleep. I still had the horrible pains shooting across my stomach and back. I couldn't even sit or lay down because the pain was so bad. Even the shirt I was wearing touching my stomach felt like it had a million pins in it. I can honestly say I have never felt pain that bad, I felt like my body was being ripped in pieces. The next day I continued to take the medicine the hospital had given me and out of sheer exhaustion I fell asleep. Then on top of everything, I got the bad case of the chills. I had sweatpants on, a hoodie w/ the hood up, the heater going full blast, and was under the bed covers and still couldn't get warm.

John came home from work around 2:30 and came in the room where I was and knew right away something was really wrong. I lay under the covers teeth chattering, but he said I felt like I was on fire. He took my temperature and saw that it was 102.4, which is all he had to see. He got me in the car and rushed me to the ER once again.

This time after checking in they admitted me right away. They did more tests and took more blood and urine and determined I had a severe kidney infection along with severe blockage in my kidneys. The next couple of days in the hospital were a blur. It was like a roller coaster. I would be ok one minute and the next I would have a high fever, with my pulse rate way above normal (130) with my blood pressure dropping. Being pregnant the doctors couldn't treat me the way they would a normal patient. They could only give me antibiotics and fluids through an IV. I was absolutely miserable. I couldn't sleep because every hour some doctor or nurse was poking me and taking more blood, or my blood pressure, or doing an ultra sound to make sure our baby was ok. To make matters worse I completely loss my appetite because of the high fever and nausea so they had to give me food via the IV as well. I felt horrible because I didn't want to hurt my baby but felt like there was nothing I can do.

The only good thing through my whole ordeal was that the doctors kept telling me our baby was fine and healthy. This gave me some peace of mind. Finally after 4 days in the hospital I started to get stable and the doctors felt they had pumped enough antibiotics in me they could release me. I was so happy to get home, but I'm still not 100%. I will be on antibiotics the rest of my preganancy because my kidney's still have blockage in them. I'm still experiencing shortness of breath and I've gained 10 pounds in 2 days of nothing but water. My ankles are the size of grapefruits, but each day is better and better.

This whole ordeal made me realize that life is truly a blessing and nothing should be taken for granted. The small things that upset you should be let go because in end they don't matter. I couldn't have gotten through any of this without my wonderful supportive husband. He was by my side every minute and took care of me through it all. He was my hero in this tough time, and this only brought us closer. This also made me realize who my true friends are, and how many people out there love and support me. So, in closing I want to say to look around and count your blessings. Even going through all of this, I have so many things in my life to be thankful for. I will definitely go through these holidays with a new perspective on things and enjoy each and every minute of it.

Curiosity killed the cat

We are about a day away from finding out what we are having and the wait is killing me. I keep mulling over in my head what this beautiful life inside of me might be, and to make it worse others are telling me what they think. I've heard everything from I'm carrying low so it must be a girl to the fact that I crave sweets so much it must be a boy. I do find these opinions of everyone amusing and helps aid my daydreaming along. I've said from the get go that I think its a girl because ever since the first thought of having kids crossed my mind, I always thought that I would have a girl first. I of course, don't mind this way of thinking. I do want a girl. I imagine myself painting her nails and putting bows in her hair. I also start thinking about when she gets older and having a girls shopping day, and me helping her pick out her first date outfit. I know she will be a daddy's little girl, and John has already said how much he is going to spoil her and protect her (I'm sure his idea of a first date outfit will be a jumpsuit that has a lock on the zippers or something). I can't help myself from looking at all the cute girl baby clothes when I go to department stores. It's amazing how many cute things are out there, and I feel like they all call my name when I walk by.

Then I start thinking about how much fun a boy would be too. They say the first born boy is usually a momma's boy and I don't have any problem with that. Of course, that means I'll have to suck it up and like the little lizards or bugs he brings to me and not get upset when he wants to play in the mud. I picture John in the front yard tossing around a football and me baking cookies for his little league team. I also can see myself giving him advice when he gets older on girls and getting him a sports car he can fix up in the driveway.

I'm trying to soak in this excitement and anxiousness. I know this won't last much longer and it’s so much fun to wonder. I will, however, be happy when the wait is over and the doctor looks over at us and tells us it’s a boy or girl! I'm looking forward to sharing that moment with John. I'm also looking forward to finally starting on the nursery. I feel so behind right now, but once I know the sex of our baby I can actually start doing things and getting things ready.

As the old saying goes, "Curiosity killed the cat." Well, I'm hoping it doesn't kill me before Thursday morning. Until then, I'm going to keep daydreaming and hoping the next day goes by fast.

Reality Check- One, Two. One, Two

Over this past Thanksgiving holiday while visiting my family in Houston I got a big reality check. It hit me like a ton of bricks for some reason, and I laid awake for a couple of nights pondering it in my head. As my husband and I made our way to Houston, in the four hour car ride, I started thinking about this past year and all that I had to be thankful for. As usual my thoughts went right to me being pregnant and this little life that was soon going to be brought into this world. Then it hit me; this was the last Thanksgiving holiday that I wouldn't be a parent. For the rest of my life I would be a mom to someone, and John and I would be parents.

I don't know why this reality hit me so hard. I've been pregnant for 5 months now and I've been preparing every way possible to become a parent. I guess I had never thought of it in that way before and it seemed to boggle my mind. The next thoughts to enter my head were the traditions John and I would set up for our kids. The traditions in our family are so wonderful. From my mom's cheesecake on Thanksgiving, to decorating the tree and making cookies with my nephews, to watching the Macy's Day parade in my pj's. What traditions would I pass on to my kid? What new traditions would we start? How would the holiday's change now that we would be parents?

All of these questions and more were floating around my head, and I almost couldn't wrap my mind around it. The closest thing I can compare it to was being on my own for the first time. For me that was college and getting my own apartment. I had to take care of meals on my own, I was setting my own curfew, paying my own bills, and doing what I wanted to do when I wanted to do. I felt like an adult at last, and that reality hit me hard too. I would never go back to being a care free kid again.

Now here I am with a husband, 3 dogs, a cat, a house and soon to be a baby. Wow! Even though that night in the car gave me a big reality check, I am so blessed and thankful for it. I wouldn't want it any other way, and I know there will be many more reality checks to come in my life. If it wasn't for these reality checks in life I don't think I'd be as prepared as I should be. So, I guess I can add that to my list of things to be thankful for. It lets me know I'm alive and living life as I should.
